I know its been said before but 90's Porsche interiors really are hideous. I bet if you asked a random person if this interior was from a 90's Porsche or a 90' s Mercury they wouldn’t guess Porsche.

That round center stack just screams Ford Taurus to me.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m sure its a nice place to sit, and everything feels nice, but aesthetically its a mess, thankfully they do a bit better now.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

and in the newer ones you can see they too inspiration from the older 911 which is nice and simple.

Kinja'd!!!

that first interior shot came from this car which is currently on BaT. shame such a pretty car has such an awful interior.

I’ve driven a couple early 2000s Porsches, they’re filled with seas of what feels like cheap plastics. It’s a good thing they are phenomenal to drive.

I don’t really have a problem with the exterior of the 996 like most people do.  But the interior is awful, and is enough to make me not consider the car.  There are a few colors and options that make it not quite so terrible, but even the best looking options still look cheap and unpleasant to me.  The first picture you’ve posted is about the worst I’ve seen, and really does make it look like a cheap domestic trying to pretend to be luxurious.

oh god it so bad.

My parents, and then my sister had a 99 Taurus . I hated that car with a passion. My parents always had station wagons because their was 4 kids. My Bother was 16 at the time so they figured they wouldn’t be needing 6 seats much longer and my dad got a really good deal on the Taurus . T echnically the Taurus did have 6 seats. the center console flipped up to make the front seats a split bench.

So being the youngest i got demoted from sitting in the way back enjoying my freedom and the view, to sitting up front between my parents. it was humiliating .

I prefer the red interior’s simple design (dare I say elegance) to the more modern design’s cluttered look.

IMO the first 3 interiors look cheap, while the red interior looks simple and understated.

I kind of liked the ovoid models when new, as they were really daring, but tastes never caught up, and the 2000+ model was normalized. It might also get old looking at that dramatic dashboard all the time - same issue on early Focus.

I feel your pain about sitting in the middle. I am glad I was the oldest, therefore the tallest/biggest, and never had to. There have been a few Taurus in my family, but we skipped the ovoid generation.

Also not a fan of the normal 996 911 wearing GT3 dressup. The real GT3 is cooler, sure, but the normal, simple 911 design is more beautiful and nothing to be ashamed of.

prior to the 99 we had a 93 Sable wagon . I always liked that car. My mom did too because it was a nice light green, also it had the Ford key pad thing wh ich was really handy as a kid because didn’t have to ask for the keys if I needed something I left in the car . After the Taurus she had a green Focus wagon with a manual trans big improvement .

My mom had a 93 Taurus, in the now-unknown color combo of white with blue interior. No keypad, but I recall it had very period looking factory wheels, and seemed like a nice car.  She bonded with it, and had it nearly 10 years.  Unfortunately , the 3.8 puked the head gasket at 80K, and by that time the car was old enough that she walked away. Now she’s a Toyota loyalist.

I remember a high school friend’s family had a 91 Taurus LX wagon, absolutely loaded, maybe every option. It was dark blue on grey leather, lace wheels, digital dash (!), not sure I have ever seen another like it. I remember riding around with him in it around 1994-95, we’d drive with the AC on and drive poorly to get the trip computer to display the lowest mpg possible.

They don’t call the 996 the ugly duckling for nothing.

ha - I had a 56k modem and paid $198.99 for it...  Those 90's “everything is oval!” interiors were just so not pleasing to the eye...

I remember upgrading to a 56K in 1996, and I think that’s what I paid, too. Oh, the good old days.

My sister had a first gen Focus with a variation on the theme, too busy:

Kinja'd!!!

I think this would eventually be irritating to look at every day.

The gray is even worse. We had an early 2000s Honda minivan that had the same color gray interior as Porsche. It i s like a sea of gray. Just awful.

Yes grey is the worst color for an interior, it especially looks bad on leather .

My Wife’ s Cavalier was grey on the inside. the Black with blue accents in here Fit is much better.
